Demonstration Alert – U.S. Embassy Paris, France

Location:  Paris and major cities, including but not limited to, Bordeaux, Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse, Lille, and Nantes.

Event: Demonstrations by labor unions, student organizations, and political parties are expected to take place on Saturday, May 26 in Paris, Bordeaux and other major cities in France.

  • The demonstration in Paris is expected to begin at 2:30 p.m. at the Gare de l’Est and move to the Bastille through the Republique district.
  • The demonstration in Bordeaux is expected to begin at 2:00 p.m. at the Place Pey Berland and end at the Place de Comedie.

Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  U.S. citizen travelers should be aware that demonstrations continue to take place frequently in all major cities in France.  In addition, continuing strikes by public sector unions may affect rail and air travel.

Actions to Take:

  • Avoid the areas of the demonstrations
  • Exercise caution if in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests
  • Monitor local media for updates
  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Keep a low profile
  • Notify friends and family of your safety
