Demonstration Alert – U.S. Embassy Paris, France

Location: Throughout France, including multiple locations in the same cities.

Event: Disruptive and potentially violent demonstrations against the health pass expected to take place on Saturday, August 7, with high numbers of participants expected.  In the past few weeks, police have used tear gas and water cannons to disperse some similar protests.  At this time the Embassy is aware of the following times and locations, but additional demonstrations in other cities in France are also likely.  Embassy employees have been told to avoid these locations.

  • Paris:
    • 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. meeting at Place du Palais Royal – in front of Conseil Constitutionnel (7th arrondisement), then at 1:00 p.m. marching along Rue de Rivoli, Place du Carrousel, pont du Carroussel, quai Volatire, rue des Saints-Peres, rue de Sevres, boulevard des Invalides, place Andre Tardieu, avenue de Villars, rue d’Estrees, place Pierre Laroque et rue d’Estrees.  The demonstration will be over at 1900 hours at the Place de Fontenoy.  Note that this will begin near the Louvre before crossing to the Left Bank and eventually ending near the Ecole Militaire.
    • 11:00 a.m Pont de Neuilly towards place du Châtelet (1st arrondisement)
    • 2:30 p.m. Ecole Militaire facing Place Joffre (1st arrondisement)
    • 2:30 p.m. Paris, Place Edmond Rostand (6th arrondisement) moving towards Palais Royal
  • Strasbourg:
    • 1:00 p.m. at Place Kleber
  • Lyon:
    • 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Place des Terreaux towards Palais de Justice via Place Bellecour.
    • 2:00 p.m. Place du general Lyautey.
  • Marseille:
    • 2:00 p.m. at Vieux port
  • Bordeaux:
    • 1 :30 p.m. Place de la Bourse
  • Rennes:
    • 2:00 p.m. Place de la Republique

Actions to Take:

  • Avoid the areas of the demonstrations
  • Exercise caution if in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests
  • Monitor local media for updates and public transport disruptions
  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Keep a low profile
  • Notify friends and family of your safety
