University of Pittsburgh Professor of Atlantic History Marcus Rediker gave a lecture at the University of Nantes providing an overview of the history of British and American slave ships that crossed the Atlantic from 1700 until the abolition of the slave trade in 1818. Nantes was the principal slave port of France throughout the 18th century. Dr. Rediker gave a riveting speech focused on the slave trade as a framework for human and inhuman interaction. Over 100 graduate students, faculty members and historians of the slave trade in Nantes attended the presentation.
