STEP 1: Complete and print online form DS-11. Please do NOT sign it. If you have never had a U.S. Social Security Number, please complete and submit this form with your passport application. If you do not remember your U.S. Social Security Number, please contact the Federal Benefits Unit before applying for the passport.
STEP 2: Your most recent U.S. passport (if applicable). If your most recent U.S. passport expired more than 15 years ago, please bring an original and copy of your valid government-issued ID (foreign passport, French ID, etc.)
STEP 3: Photographs. The Embassy will reject any photographs that do not meet the specified requirements.
STEP 4: Proof of citizenship: original and copy of your U.S. Birth certificate, Report of Birth Abroad, or Naturalization Certificate
STEP 5: You can pay the fee of 165 USD (or the Euro equivalent) at the time of your interview in cash or by credit card (the credit card holder must be present).

STEP 7: Read the security information to access the embassy or consulate (list of prohibited items).
STEP 8: Make an appointment from our online calendar where you can choose a date and time slot of your choice.
If there are no appointments available when your first check the booking system, please keep checking. New appointments are regularly added, including appointments available after daily cancellations. These appointments can only be booked through the online calendar, not by email or telephone.
Upon receiving a complete application the processing time for a passport is 4-6 weeks.
According to Section 215 of the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. 1185), it is illegal for an American citizen to enter or leave the U.S. on anything other than an American passport.
This applies to dual citizens as well, meaning that persons holding e.g. both French and American citizenship and passports must enter and leave the U.S. on a U.S. passport. They may not enter/leave the U.S. on a foreign passport. This applies to children as well as adults.
