Secretary Kerry visits Saint-Briac-sur-Mer during 70th Anniversary of D-Day

Secretary Kerry visited Saint-Briac-sur-Mer for an official ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the town’s liberation and the renaming of the town’s main square after U.S. photographer Tony Vaccaro, a WWII veteran whose iconic images retraced his landing in Normandy to the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Vaccaro’s most famous photo – “the Kiss of Liberation” – was taken in Saint-Briac-sur-Mer. After laying a wreath at St. Briac’s liberation monument, Secretary Kerry gave a moving speech before a crowd of over 1,000 spectators in which he recalled the time he had spent at his ancestral home in St. Briac and extolled the importance of French-American ties.
