Passport Services in Paris

ANNOUNCEMENT:  Beginning August  10, 2020, U.S. Embassy Paris, France is accepting online fee payments for adult U.S. passport renewal applications.  Paying online allows you to mail your application to the U.S. Embassy without the need to apply in person.  Please see our Passport Renewal webpage to determine if you are eligible for online fee payment.

U.S. citizens residing or traveling abroad who require a U.S. passport are issued the latest state-of-the-art passports that incorporate photo-digitized images and other enhanced security features.  These passports are produced at a domestic U.S. passport facility.  U.S. citizens are encouraged to apply early for renewal of expiring passports.

Reminder for Dual National U.S. Citizens:  U.S. law requires all U.S. citizens, including dual-national citizens, to enter the United States using their U.S. passport. We urge all U.S. citizens to keep their U.S. passports current.

Please do not come to the Embassy if you or a family member are sick or if you have been in close contact with anyone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19.

Please arrive on time, ensure that all forms are completed fully and that you have all original documents with copies ready to present. You should also be prepared to pay for your service in cash with exact change for the fee. Our goal is to minimize the time each client spends in our waiting room. If you are unable to find an available appointment online and you have a ticketed flight within the next three weeks, please contact PassportsParis@state.gov and attach a copy of your ticket to request service.

U.S. citizens should visit our Embassy webpage on COVID-19 for information on conditions in France and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive alerts and make it easier to locate you in an emergency.

When traveling to France, please note that the Government of France does NOT recognize the 12-page U.S. emergency passport, issued by U.S. embassies and consulates overseas, as a valid travel document for visa-free travel, and, if traveling on this emergency passport, you may be refused boarding and/or entry to France by immigration officials. Read more about French entry/exit requirements here.

Important Note: Passports must be valid for at least three months beyond your planned date of departure from the Schengen area.

A Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA) is a formal document certifying the acquisition of United States citizenship at birth for a person born abroad to a U.S. citizen parent or parents who meet the requirements for transmitting citizenship under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA).  United States non-citizen nationals are also eligible for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, using the non-citizen option.

CRBA applications must be made before the child’s 18th birthday.  We recommend that parents apply for the CRBA as soon as possible after the child’s birth.

To be eligible to apply for a CRBA online at the U.S. Embassy Paris, France, you MUST meet all the following criteria:

  1. Was the child born in FRANCE?
To be eligible, you must answer YES.
  2. Is the child under the age of 18?
To be eligible, you must answer YES.
  3. Was at least one parent a U.S. citizen or U.S. non-citizen national when the child was born?

To be eligible, you must answer NO.
  5. Can you use a credit/debit card or a direct payment method from a U.S. dollar denominated bank account (also known as “ACH”) to pay online for your Consular Report of Birth Abroad application?
To be eligible, you must answer YES.
  6. Are you a biological parent of a child born abroad who is applying for that child?
To be eligible, you must answer YES.

If any of the above statements do not apply to you, you MUST apply by completing a paper application (DS-2029).

Do you wish to apply electronically for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad?
YES NO
This new process will allow U.S. citizen parents to complete a Consular Report of Birth Abroad application online, upload all required documents, and submit payment prior to the in-person interview. The easy-to-use online application process provides applicants with step-by-step instructions on how to complete the application.
